چکیده

Let G be a linear algebraic group, H a closed subgroup of G and X a G-variety. This paper explores the connection between G-orbits and H-orbits in X, concentrating in particular on the question of when we have the implications G · x closed in X implies H · x closed in X, and vice versa. Some of the general results found in this paper are then used in the special case where G and H are reductive and X is affine to extend two classical results of Luna from characteristic zero to arbitrary characteristic.

No : 6 Title : ‘ Cocharacter - Closure and the Rational Hilbert - Mumford Theorem ’ Author ( S )

For a field k, let G be a reductive k-group and V an affine k-variety on which G acts. Using the notion of cocharacter-closed G(k)-orbits in V , we prove a rational version of the celebrated Hilbert-Mumford Theorem from geometric invariant theory. We initiate a study of applications stemming from this rationality tool. A number of examples are discussed to illustrate the concept of cocharacter-...

Automorphisms, Root Systems, and Compactifications of Homogeneous Varieties

Let G be a complex semisimple group and let H ⊆ G be the group of fixed points of an involutive automorphism of G. Then X = G/H is called a symmetric variety. In [CP], De Concini and Procesi have constructed an equivariant compactification X which has a number of remarkable properties, some of them being: i) The boundary is the union of divisors D1, . . . , Dr. ii) There are exactly 2 orbits. Orbits and Invariants Associated with a Pair of Commuting Involutions

Let σ , θ be commuting involutions of the connected reductive algebraic group G, where σ , θ , andG are defined over a (usually algebraically closed) field k, char k = 2. We have fixed point groupsH := G andK := G and an action (H×K)×G → G, where ((h, k), g) → hgk−1, h ∈ H , k ∈ K , g ∈ G. Let G/(H ×K) denote SpecO(G)H×K (the categorical quotient). Let A be maximal among subtori S of G such tha...

Fano symmetric varieties with low rank

The symmetric projective varieties of rank one are all smooth and Fano by a classic result of Akhiezer. We classify the locally factorial (respectively smooth) projective symmetric G-varieties of rank 2 which are Fano. When G is semisimple we classify also the locally factorial (respectively smooth) projective symmetric G-varieties of rank 2 which are only quasi-Fano. Moreover, we classify the ...

Affine Embeddings of Homogeneous Spaces

Let G be a reductive algebraic group and H a closed subgroup of G. An affine embedding of the homogeneous space G/H is an affine G-variety with an open G-orbit isomorphic to G/H . The homogeneous space G/H admits an affine embedding if and only if G/H is a quasi-affine algebraic variety. We start with some basic properties of affine embeddings and consider the cases, where the theory is well-de...
